Surgery Completed

After waiting all Tuesday afternoon for the doctor (the patient before me had complications and it took longer than anticipated), my ankle surgery started about 4:30. Everyone I ran into asked for my birthdate and what was suppposed to happen–plate for the small break in the back bone of the ankle and some ligament work.

I remember the anesthesiologist putting the stuff in the port that the nurse had painlessly put in earlier. First he did linacain (sp.) and he said it would sting a bit. It did. The other two things he added worked immediately. I said, “Wow this works fast.” Kathryn laughed, and that’s all I remember until I was in the recovery room. Bob & Kathryn were in there with me.

The key to being released was being able to pee and have a pain not more than the 4-5 scale. At some point they checked to see if I could potty. Yes, I could.  It don’t remember much about the trip to the bathroom. Think it was just across from my bed, but not sure. Pain was under 4 on a 10 point scale.  I qualified and we were home by 7:30.FullSizeRender(26)

Great docs and nurses, wonderful family care. Bob stayed home Wednesday morning until Kevin & Sarah got to the Lakehouse with Sara around 10:30.

Kathryn with Nelson & Lilly  (in first pic below) came about 1:30 so Kevin could run some errands. Nelson asked both on entering and leaving if my foot was better. He has a big heart. After Kevin returned, they left in time to get to 4:00 swim team. Laura arrived after her last Pilates class  and before Kat and kids left. Continuous coverage for the invalid. (Kevin leaving, looks like he’s wading through the water He’s on a sidewalk outside our windows, second pic.)

We’re using one of her wheelchairs for transporting. It must weigh a third of the one on the right that I’ve been using. The red one on the left doesn’t have wheels, someone has to push me but it sure makes it easier for the folks carting me around.  The right one was my mothers. Nice that she still helps out 🙂

IMG_3896IMG_3888 (1)                                          So I’m feeling pretty good. If I don’t move my foot, my ankle doesn’t hurt. Not bad I’d say. Now I have this one small issue: my toes are numb, and I can’t move them. Trusting this will change over time, but it’s a bit disconcerting.

(Added Thursday morning: Yea! I can move my toes! Boy is that feeling going in a book sometime. Telling your toes to move and nothing happening! Just Wow!

I appreciate all the supportive comments and prayers sent through FB & texts. Friends and family are priceless.

My desk is set up enough that I can start working on my next book today. I don’t need the internet, but needed the space. (Windows 10 got installed on my big computer and it doesn’t recognize the antenna that allows a connection to the Hot Spot—which works on my laptop. Technology! GRRRR!) A new antenna has been ordered. I have the first 5 chapters printed out so I have lots to do before I need the computer again.

Are you a caretaker of someone who needs taking care of? Is it harder for people who see themselves as more of the caretaker type to let others help than it is for others?

Love to hear from you.

    • Hey, Jo-Ann, felt it was important to give an update. The injury was more serious than I realized. The broken bone would’ve been enough, but the torn ligament was an added issue. Thanks for stopping by .:)

    • Hey, Regina. I am truly blessed. Great husband, daughters & SsIL! I think I’ll be ready to be out of this chair when it gets to 6-8 weeks, which they’re telling me. Definitely a learning experience. Thanks so much for stopping by.:)

  1. When GF had this surgery, she had a scooter where she rested her knee on the platform and scooted around with her other foot. So check that out and you’ll be rocking soon.

    • Hey, Vicki, one of my neighbors used a scooter like you’re talking about. When I fell, I bruised and banged up my knee at the same time. My knees have always had issues, just don’t think this will work for me, but I’ll check it out next month when my knee should be better. Thanks so much for stopping by. 🙂

    • Hey, Jacquie, yes, it’s very weird. You see this all the time in TV shows and with people you may know. I’ll never think of it so lightly. I hadn’t heard before hand that the paralysis might happen, so it was very scary at first. So relieved, my tosies are working. Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

  2. Hope everything continues to go well for you. So nice you have family close.
I had that not being able to move after my knee replacement. The next day, from a sitting position, they asked me to raise my lower leg and nothing happened. Weirdest feeling. Then they had me lift the leg with my hands and that got the muscles talking to each other again. Strange how things work.

    • Hey, Kate. My goodness, now that would’ve been scary. I figured I’d still be able to walk with some sort of accomodation if my toes didn’t come back, but your knee not moving…that’s big. I could move my toes with my hand, but that was weird too, because I only “felt” it with my fingers. No feeling in the toes. Thanks so much forstopping by. 🙂

  3. What a great, caring, beautiful family Doesn’t your heart just burst with joy and love when you see them scurrying around and worrying about you? They will certainly help you get better soon. Get your rest. Don’t worry about that book. Hopefully the pain is easing up. Seeing the photo of the wheel chairs really brought the reality of your situation home to me. At least with 2 chairs you can have races!!

    • Hey,JQ. You made me laugh about the wheel chair races. The red one the rider can’t make move, except a bit with the one good foot. You’re really dependent on someone else pushing you. My older daughter took the laptop away from me when I started to work on this mid-day. She said I had to rest. And she’s right. I’m about to get back in my chair now to put up my foot. Thanks so much for stopping by.

  4. Hi Marsha, so glad to hear you are recovering. How wonderful that you have lots of family around to help out. And to have such fabulous views as you recuperate! I hope the lakeside air aids you in your recovery and you are soon up and running around. Take good care xx

    • Hey, Helena. Yes, I’m glad to be on this side of surgery. Taking 2 pills for pain about 4 times a day. + antibiotics and muscle relaxers. That means I’m sleeping a lot, but guess that’s what’s needed to heal. Thanks for stopping by. The view sooths the spirit for sure. 🙂

  6. Hope you get better soon! Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers! But remember, it’s your ankle, not your hands…so…no excuses when it comes to flossing! (just kidding! just wanted to put a smile on your face!)

    • Hey, Kathy. How sweet of you to say that. We are blessed by the kids. I’ve never broken anything and aside from having c-sections for each girl, I’ve never really been laid up this way. I trust I’m piling up all kinds of things for some future book. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by. 🙂
