Maine Vacation, Part 2

I promised you more pictures and some info on other parts of our awesome Maine Vacation. It was practically perfect. Even the rain on Sunday was soft.

img_4366On Monday with a good friend, Klaran Warner, who used to live in Fort Worth but now lives in New Hampshire, we went to the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. We’d visited when we were here three years ago, but it’s so magnificent, it deserves multiple visits. http://www.mainegardens.org/visit/hours-admission-getting/

Pumpkins were everywhere! Some were even painted turquoise. Now you know I love the color turquoise, but I draw the line at my pumpkins. 🙂

The children’s gardens were equally wonderful.

We hiked down to the river. I was delighted I was able to do that. We rode a small bus back up to the top.img_4368

 One of my favorite areas was the fairy gardens. People were encouraged to use what was on the ground to make their own fairy houses. Some designs were pretty cool.

The Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens gave me the idea for the land trust in ACT OF TRUST. There are a number of land trusts in Maine and across the country.

Bob and I spent one day driving back to Portland so we could spend more time at the Portland Head Light. This is the light house that’s at the top of my web site and on much of my PR materials.  img_4437We’d only grabbed a couple of pictures last time, but this time we toured the building itself. Such amazing history. One of the things I enjoy about our New England trips is the abundance of history.

Within the structure were pictures tracing the life of the lighthouse from its beginning. What was even better was a time line running just under the middle of the wall stating other things that were going on in the world at the time. It was so interesting I don’t know why I didn’t take pictures of those sections of info.

While in Portland we ate at one of our favorite restaurants. DiMilos. It’s a ship right on the water. Cool decor and great food. img_4441  img_4443

Walking around Portland reminded us of the Camp Bowie part of Fort Worth. We have red bricks. Portland had cobblestones on a short street we cut through on. Beautiful but not the easiest things to walk on. Now that we have our own water view, I’m not sure when we’ll return, but we have lots of pictures and memories stored up to last a long time.

  1. Great photos, Marsha! Although I’m with you on the turquoise pumpkins 🙂 So pleased you were able to hike. That’s great news. I’ve just pre-ordered my copy of The Theatre. Looking forward to reading!

  2. Marsha, the lighthouse photo is absolutely STUNNING! 🙂 Maine is stunning!!!

    There are so many favorite places I love to visit. Here is a short list: Lake Michigan, London, Venice, Barcelona, NYC, San Francisco, etc.

    We have most of our vacation destinations planned for next year and even some tickets bought. We will be taking three major trips. The first is a California Coastal Cruise. (Bill is into cruises, so we’ll probably do one each year.) The second, Poland, Hungary, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria. The third we aren’t sure about yet. I’d like to go on a road trip in the U.S. I’m not sure if Bill’s back could hold up on a long distance trip. This week I came up with the idea of renting an RV, the kind you drive in and travelling around destinations still unknown. Possibly Colorado, Santa Fe, New Mexico????

    I bet you didn’t want such a long answer to your question. Lol! 🙂

    • Hey, Susan. Thanks. I thought the lighthouse pic turned out pretty well. It’s mine as are most of the pics on my blog. 🙂 iPhones make it so simple. You have a great list for future trips. I want to go to the Grande Hotel in upper Michigan. Have never been in that state. I’d go to London again, so I could get up to see Helena, but not interested in the other places. I have other friends who’ve done the kind of river cruises you’re talking about and they’ve said they are wonderful. Know you’ll have a good time. We have neighbors who have a smaller motor home they travel around in and sleep in. It’s very nice. I say go for it. Whatever works for you & Bill. We need to see everything we can while we can. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by.

  4. What beautiful pictures. I’d love to see the botanical garden. The fairy houses are clever and fun. I love lighthouses–that’s the theme for my bathroom decorations at home.And the history. Please come to the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. My favorite place to go in the world. The hotel is beautiful, but the bike ride around the island is gorgeous–9 miles. Thanks for sharing Maine with us!

    • Hey, JQ. Oh my 9 miles on a bike! I’m not up to that, but it will be fun to ride a bike and get around on foot everywhere. That’s one of the things I’m looking forward to. Don’t know if we’ll make it to The Grand this summer, but soon, I know. Glad you enjoyed my pics of Maine. Thanks for all your support. 🙂
