30th Day of the Whole 30

I’m writing this on Wednesday and I can hardly believe I’ve gotten through this period. It certainly helped having Laura along for the ride with me. (Thanks, Laura.) And thanks to Bob, because my eating patterns did impact him. He’s done it along with me, with a few exceptions. For most breakfasts he’s eaten toast, butter, and jelly along with his eggs and puts butter on his potatoes with suppers. He’s had wine, too. We’ve eaten out a whole lot less, too. We haven’t just gone anywhere. We’ve had to give thought to whether I could eat Whole 30 compliant.

Results are good, but somewhat skewed. For the last two weeks, Bob & I’ve been battling colds. Vestiges are still hanging around. 😦 I resisted meds as long as possible, but ultimately gave in. That meant ingesting “Sugar.” Every cough drop or cough medicine has sugar or some fructose thing in it. I reported last week a loss of 10 lbs. Well, that’s up to 13 now. I think I’d have made it to 15 if I hadn’t gotten sick.  I want to celebrate the 13 lbs, but the way I was going at first, I really thought 15 was possible. FullSizeRender (1) (My poor little fat feet after the broken ankle!)

What’s next? Hopefully, continue eating healthy and losing weight.

Well, Wednesday night, Laura & I celebrated our achievement with a glass of wine at one of our restaurants where we can eat Whole 30 compliant. I’ve had their house Merlot many times before and enjoyed it. My glass was a bit disappointing.  I didn’t even drink the whole thing. I’ve never left a glass with wine in it ever.  Don’t know if my tasters have just changed or if the cold and medicine has done a number on the tasters. ???  Thursday and Friday,  I’m back on Whole 30 for two days to see if I can determine anything negative from the wine. Hopefully, not.

IMG_6656 (I had just had a mega coughing siege before this picture.)

Saturday, I add back in legumes with a slather of peanut butter on an apple, peas in my salad at lunch, and black beans with my otherwise Whole 30 compliant Mexican supper.

Then 2-Days Whole 30.

Tuesday, I add in non-glutten grains. I can’t wait to eat Gluten Free oatmeal for breakfast! So tired of eggs. I’ll sweeten with blueberries and add a few pecans. White rice with supper (though I prefer brown rice.)

Two days of Whole 30 compliant eating. (I’ll update you on the blog.)

Friday adds in dairy. I don’t eat a lot of diary. I use Almond milk on cereal, but I can add a bit of cheese to my salad and butter to my baked potato for supper. (I don’t think this means ice cream, which is my favorite way to eat dairy. 🙂 )

Saturday/Sunday is Whole 30, which may be a bit difficult since I’ll be on a church women’s retreat. Will need to take along some healthy snacks and my salad dressing.

Monday. Yea! I get to eat a whole grain cereal for breakfast. This is what I’ve missed the most!!! Two slices of bread for a sandwich, and a beer with supper. (I seldom drink beer—just too many calories.)

Tuesday & Wednesday are Whole 30 compliant eating. IMG_6560Then on Thursday, the process is complete, and I will have info to guide my eating and drinking for the rest of my life.

So, at this point, I’ve got two more weeks to work through the process. I’m eager to just get back to “regular eating,” but I’d be short circuiting what I’ve already done if I didn’t play this plan out all the way. I believe I will find “regular eating” will be not eating some things, maybe ever. Next week, I’ll post what I think a plan is I can live with.

Laura feels a whole bunch better on this eating plan. I can’t say that I do, but then I’ve had a dreadful cold for two weeks, so I’m really curious if I detect any change in feelings when I add back in certain foods for a period of time.

Thanks for going on this journey with me. (Not like you had a lot of choice. LOL)

Some of you have your own specific food issues, where if you eat something you feel really bad. I just gain weight and then I feel bad. LOL How have you handled it? Do you limit or eliminate the food?

If you’re in the area, please put on your calendar, Friday, February 9, 6:30 to 8:30 at Haltom City Public Library for a Night of Romance with local Texas authors, their books, and chocolate. Love to see you.

  1. Marsha, congratulations on your weight loss!! I’m sure it was extremely difficult to maintain the diet while you were sick. I wouldn’t have. You obviously have more willpower than I do.

I am still at 4 pounds loss in the amount of time you lost 13. I was on a very high dose of Prednisone this month for a respiratory illness, I’m glad I didn’t gain. I can’t wait until Friday to have some wine.

    Best wishes!

    • Hey, Susan. Thanks. It was a bit tedious, but not really hard to follow the plan. Congratulations for not gaining when you were on that powerful medicine. They can play havoc with our systems, but sometimes you just have to take something when you’re sick. You have the added temptation of Bill being an amazing baker! I’d not survive that. LOL Thanks so much for stopping by. 🙂

  2. I found my moods evened out when I extracted sugar and whole grains from my nutrition plan. I have them now and again, and I suffer in mood and cravings for a few days after, so I heavily limit them. Mind, the moods may be, in part, due to the water my body holds after I take in starchy carbohydrates. 🙂
It’s been fascinating to hear your progress and experience. Michael and I talk about it as it’s the only plan one of my clients has utilized that I haven’t tried, but I’ve already eliminated grains, sugar, legumes, and soy. I only lack dairy and wine, and I’ve done both in the past separately with no issues other than being a bit moody at feeling deprived.
I understand the idea is to free your body of inflammation so you can identify the real culprit and recognize how it affects your body. Interesting discovery adventure. Good luck with the last weeks!

    • Hey, Renée. You eat so healthily already, I’m not sure you need this. I’m really curious to see if when I add back if I notice a difference. I didn’t with the wine, but then I only drank half a glass. I’m so eager to get on to the other stuff. LOL You know I like the “control” aspect of this. LOL I don’t see this so much as a “diet” as a new eating plan. Thanks so much for following along and all your support. 🙂

  3. Marsha, I’m so happy for your weight loss in spite of having that nasty cold. I hope you can come up with a plan that works for you (aka one you can live with but not gain weight). You know my issues, and I’ve just had to eliminate a lot of food that my body can’t process or flat out refuses to have in it! Not pretty, not fun, but I’d rather feel good than not, so a necessity. I live on the memories of when I could eat those foods and not be affected! 😫 I give you and Laura credit for trying. A P.E.O. sister of mine just did the Engine 2 Seven-Day Rescue Diet—Eat Plants, Lose Weight, Save Your Health, by R.I.P. Esselstyn. She was a complete skeptic at first when her husband said he was going to do it in a multi- school challenge, but since she’s done it, she said everything positive happened for her, including weight loss, but the biggest plus is that it brought her out of a deep, severe depression and broke her Diet Coke habit as well. I think it’s important to find out what works for you personally, since we both know what works for one doesn’t necessarily work for all. Your next two weeks sound interesting, and as you reset your metabolism, I’ll pray that you can shed those last few pounds.
    Very proud of you!🙌🏻😊❤️

    • Hey, Sandy. Bless your heart, yes. You do have some food issues. And yes, we all have to find what works for us. I have tons more to lose, but this is a healthier way to do it than many other things I’ve tried. I feel like I’m spinning my wheels right here at the end eager to add back in and see how I feel. Thanks so much for stopping by.

  4. Congrats, Marsha! Sorry you were sick for part of your journey! 13 pounds in a month is impressive – l like your plan for adding back certain things and then stepping back again. What ever works for you is what you should stick with – and plan ahead for both times you want to bring some of your own food items and time you want to be a little less disciplined and celebrate! ❤️🎈🎉

    • Hey, Julie. Was disappointed to not reach 15, but I’m proud I didn’t give up when I got sick. It was a temptation, but I’d already done 2 weeks at the point I got the cold and just couldn’t throw that away. BD cake is still somewhere on the horizon, and I’ll enjoy every bite. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by.

  5. Kudos to you, Marsha, for sticking to this diet even through illness! Also your hubby deserves a bow too. Celebrate 13 lbs loss and don’t be disappointed it isn’t 15. Glad you are feeling better now. I hope you discover the foods your body can’t tolerate. I have no allergies that I know of. I have discovered onions and garlic usually come back on me, so I’ve cut back on them, although I love them. GT and I cut back on portions and that also helps to feel more comfortable and not so bloated by the end of the day. Wishing you continued success!
