Where to Start?!

Wow! What’s going on in our world these days? Hurricane Dorian moving at 0 mph! Dear God, have mercy. I’m sure you’ve seen the gut wrenching pictures of people walking through waist high water carrying their dogs. This picture rips out my heart. IMG_1893 I took from my TV.

A follow up shot doesn’t show the white dog in her left hand. I’m praying her father got him. The terrifying pictures of water rushing into second floors of houses. These poor souls must’ve felt like they were facing the apocalypse.

Then there’s the wonderful story of the woman taking almost 100 dogs into her house. IMG_1894I took from my TV.

The wonderful part of this story is lots of money came in from the generous people in our country. She’ll be able to build a larger shelter. There was also the woman who let her ponies into her house with hay and all.

I’m sure you’ve been praying for all those in the path of this dreadful storm. Just the sheer length of time of worrying where, if, when is wearing on everyone, not counting the destruction and loss of life and property had to take a toll on everyone’s mental health. And now it looks like the coasts of Georgia and the Carolinas are in the path. God, have mercy.

Even if I weren’t from Texas, I couldn’t omit talking about another mass shooting with an AK some sort of weapon in our state.  I walk (it’s too hot to walk outside to get my 10 K steps) and shop at my neighborhood Walmart. And now when I go, I look for hiding places.IMG_0049 I took last year while walking.

Kudos to Walmart that they will no longer sell ammunition for those weapons. They had earlier stopped selling the weapons everywhere but Alaska, and they will stop that, too.

Guys, I have my mother’s gun, a .38 and a Concealed Handgun Permit. I’m not against guns. But no private citizen needs an automatic weapon that can kill 9 people in 30 seconds. No one! This is a weapon for the military.

The guy in Odessa who couldn’t pass a background check to buy a weapon from a registered dealer apparently bought it in a private sale. In Texas, these sales are not regulated at all. On Tuesday night I saw an online poll on a local TV channel where 89 percent of almost 1000 people who responded think we should require background checks on these sales, too.

I posted on FB recently about the need to reeducate our elected officials about how government works. The house passes a bill. The Senate passes a bill. If they are different the two groups send representatives to work out a compromise bill that both groups can agree to. Then that bill goes to the President. You don’t need the President’s permission to send a bill.  Even if the President decides to veto a bill, Congress has the power to override that veto. The House passed commonsense gun legislation back in February, but Senator Mitch McConnell will not bring up the three bills for discussion without knowing what the President will do. This is very disturbing. How did we come to this place where the whole process is turned on its head?

I’m ranting, but I’m really tired of hearing of a mass shooting every couple of weeks. I don’t like worrying my kids or grandkids might be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Or you, your kids, or your grandkids. This is an American problem. It doesn’t happen in other countries in the numbers it does here. We must do something. VOTE!

  1. This past week, Texas loosened it’s gun laws after the shootings at Odess, and El Paso. The U.S. has a wild west mentality.

We were having dinner at friends and talked about the ability to get guns. One friend said, what about guns that were people got with a background check and then they die and others inherit the guns? You mentioned you have your mother’s gun. What if those others are nuts?

I talked to our Chief of Police about guns that were being sold in a garage sale. He said there was nothing they could do.

I honestly think all these shootings will continue. I really don’t see how it can end. People better pray that they and their loved ones are not in the wrong place at the wrong time. And you have to go out and live.

Mitch McConnell only cares about money. The NRA Has Thrown $1.6 Million At Mitch McConnell To Block Expanded Background Checks.

    • Hey, Susan. You are correct, inherited guns just are. For me, it’s all about the AK 47 and 15s or any AK type weapon that can shoot so many bullets at one time. It’s insane that anyone not in law enforcement or the military can get these. I realize some folks have them already, but there’s not reason for more to be out there. Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

  2. One does not need an assault weapon for a hunting rifle. Shouldn’t take that many rounds to get a deer!! I would think gun control would be a bipartisan issue but I know many who are afraid if the gov can take away the assault weapons, they will take away all guns eventually. Keep praying.

    • Hey, JQ. Yes, you’re so right. It should be a bipartisan issue. If you’re a parent, there should be no question which side of the issue you’re on. I’ve never heard anyone say they want to disarm the country, except where the AK weapons are concerned. Thanks so much for stopping by.

  3. I really hope the politicians read how bills are supposed to be put through and who gets what. You seem to have a firm grasp on the subject and unfortunately the politicians – Don’t.

As for the guns proper background checks and possibly written tests would make sense. I trust you but up here even inherited guns have to be turned in unless you get a license for your guns. And I don’t think I’ve ever seen a real gun at a garage sale. Lots of toy guns since for about a year my young son (all grown up now) realized he could use his allowance to stalk his own armeggedon while neither I or any other friends r relatives would supply him. After that his fascination with them seemed to die down.

    • Hey, Pat. Basic Civics in high school and college. Bob and I have always been interested in government, but these folks in Washington seem to be clueless. 😦 I had to take an all day long class and training in shooting my gun and finger print check to get my CHP. I have to renew it every 4 years (or at least I did, I think the Legislature may have softened that. 😦 ) We have to get a license and renew it regularly to drive a car. Seems to me to be the same thing. Excellent that y’all have to turn in inherited guns w/o a license. We are so far from there in Texas despite we’ve had so many mass shootings, not to mention all the other gun deaths. Thanks so much for stopping by.
