Frequently on this blog I’ll tell you about author friends of mine and what they are writing. Well, the first topic of discussion is an author who I do not know. I mean not even on Facebook. 😊
I’m not sure why I purchased the first book I read by Robin James, SILENT WITNESS, but I’m so glad I did. This book is called a Legal Thriller. Not what I usually read. The story is told in first person. Not what I usually enjoy. The stories don’t end with a traditional Happily Ever After. Not my usual preference. Her stories have more of a Happily For Now ending. The heroine is maybe in her mid-thirties. Younger than I normally prefer, which is 45 or 50 on up. There’s a bit more cussing from the heroine than I prefer.

Having said all this, you’re probably confused since I’ve implied I’m recommending Robin James’ books. I am indeed. I’ve now read three of them, and I pretty much inhale this woman’s books. So why do I like them so much?
Cass Leary, the heroine, is a strong female. She’s overcome lots of obstacles and becomes a lawyer, spending years working for a high powered Chicago law firm that represented questionable clients. She’s currently living back in her hometown which she escaped from as soon as she could. Her family is important to her. She stepped in to keep them together. But each of her three siblings has issues, too. We meet an older woman lawyer mentor and two men on opposite sides of the law who care about her. Complex characters, with tangled plots, and awesome trial scenes. The sex is there, but not in your face. So if any of this sounds interesting to you (or even if not),I urge you to check out all of the books by Robin James. I can’t wait to read the next one.

So here is my second recommendation. It’s a show on HGTV called UNSELLABLE HOUSES. Two women probably in their mid-40s who are twins run a remodel business based on a unique business plan. The show takes place in the Pacific Northwest, near Snohomish, Washington.

They pay the cost of remodeling a client’s house then sell the house for more than the client had been unable to sell their home. After paying themselves back for the cost of the remodel, they split the profit with the client 50/50. Their houses sell within a couple of days or a week and almost always for over the asking price. I love their decorating style. I love the repartee between the sisters. They make me laugh. I love the relationship with their contractor Jeff.

Besides all that, we see some gorgeous scenery, and cool, original homes in the Pacific Northwest. Some of them are split levels, which I’m not a fan of, but Lesley and Lindsay can even make those houses look great and sell.

I’m sure one of the reasons I enjoy this show is because they are sisters (twins even). As an only child I’ve always found those relationships interesting. (I even read the Dana Girls Mystery Series as a kid. Like Nancy Drew, but with twin sisters.)
So if you need an entertaining uplifting show, Check out Unsellable Houses on HGTV.
Remember, I’m looking for Beta Readers for COOMPROMISE. More about that in next week’s Newsletter.
Do you have any authors or TV shows to recommend? Love to hear from you.

Sometimes it’s good to read a book that isn’t our usual. It obviously was for you.
I’m reading a book titled Becoming NADIA by MIU author, Cyrus Keith. Bill had read the books before and thought they were very good. I’m enjoying it. It’s not my usual type of book. I think he’s a good author.

Sorry, Susan. Something happend and my response to you ended up in my response to Helena’s comment. Weirdness here. Not sure what’s caused it, but I can’t see all of what I’m typing. ???

Thanks for the recommendations, Marsha. I love the premise behind Unsellable Houses. I hear you can get the UK show Escape to the Country in the US, where city dwellers try to find their perfect home in the countryside. My husband is addicted to that show. I love these sorts of shows, too. There’s always a story in them somewhere!

Hey, Helena. I haven’t seen the show you mention, but I’m sure I’d like it. We do get a My Lottery House that is done in England and Europe. Fascinating. Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing. 🙂

Hello Helena. Bill and I love watching Escape to the Country. We usually escape to the show on Saturday afternoons. Watching Escape to the Country, we are always quite boisterous, giving our views of the houses and what we would choose or not choose. And what they should choose…lol. It’s a lot of fun.

Susan, Escape to the Country yesterday started off in my town of Saltaire, and they went round West Yorkshire, where I live! And my author friend Melinda Hammond (who writes for Harlequin as Sarah Mallory, and is one of the Miss Moonshine authors) once featured on Escape to the Country herself. She’s bought a wonderful house in the north of Scotland now, and she had great fun being on the show.

How wonderful. I wonder if I could find the episode your friend was on and if we saw the show. Bill just said he remembers an author was on the show and it took place in Scotland. So cool also the show started off in your town. 🙂
