This is the first blog of the summer months. Can you believe it? Wow this year is flying by.
If you follow me on Facebook, you know we had a ton of rain in May. So much rain on already soggy ground, that water made its way into our house. Not like you’d expect through doors or windows. No this was through the foundation at the back of our house. Our house sits way below the road with quite a slope behind us.
We should have dealt with the issue when we first discovered it back six years ago during the remodel, but everything costs more than you expect, and our contractors slapped down extra concrete and slanted it away from the house. That worked for a while.
Then another giant rain came a few years ago and sure enough the water still got in. We checked about putting in a French drain, but yikes, more money than we wanted to spend right then. So my wonderful husband found sealer to put all along the back. You know what it is. You’ve seen the adds on TV. And that stuff worked! We didn’t have any more water seeping into the house.
Until Sunday night, when the deluge hit on ground already soggy from days and days of rain. The water oozed in.
We soaked it up with towels. The next day I rented a water vac from Home Depot. But that was super labor intensive and got little water from underneath the floor. That’s where it was now. When you stepped on the kitchen floor, water seeped up between the cracks.
One of my daughters has a de-humidifier. Yea! I cannot say enough good things about this device. Even now when water doesn’t seep up through the cracks, this thing sucks the water out of the air or floor or somewhere. I empty the vat, put it back together and turn it on. My daughter says this may take a week.
But I think we’re saving our floors.
And we’re going to bite the bullet and get the drainage taken care of.
Do you have experience with drainage issues? Or floods in your house? These experiences remind me of how much I take for granted in the daily living of my life when most things work they way they’re supposed to.

Ugh! Drainage issues are tough. Water finds a way! We occasionally get water in our basement and will eventually replace the carpet with tiles. Hope it dries out soon! I’m ready for some extended periods of sunshine!!

Hey, Darlene. We don’t have carpet, so that’s a good thing. This de-humidifier I’ve borrowed from my daughter is magic. Amazing how it sucks the water out. Yes, I think everyone is ready for extended sunshine. Even when it didn’t rain in May, for the most part it was cloudy. Now that kept the temps down for which I’m very grateful. Sorry about the water in your house. We have had water in our lower level a couple of times just along the edge of part of a room. The worse was one April when we had a couple of feet of snow in the backyard and the snow started to melt. Bill somehow directed the water away from the house. We haven’t had a problem since.

Hey, Susan. Thanks, I love my graphic. I don’t know what I’ll do when the 9th book comes out in late fall. I’ll figure out something. My goodness, I never considered the issue of melting snow. I can see how that could be a problem. Even with the deep freeze snow we had this year, I don’t remember hearing about flooding issues because the ground was so very dry. LOL Just a couple of months and now the ground is saturated. Good news from the lawn sprinkler guy. We may not have to put in a French drain. He had several suggestions of what to do, including moving our propane tank. That’s now on my todo list. Thanks so much for stopping by. 🙂

Our basement flooded. Lots of dollars to fix. Then again and caught in time. We determined how it happened.

The joys of homeownership never end. Meanwhile, we’re expecting another brutal year of wildfires in California as we’re in our fourth drought in the last five years.

I’m very sorry to hear about your drainage problem. Our street flooded a few years back, because we’re near a river, but luckily our side of the street is on higher ground. Even so, the air is damp due to the nearness of the water, and we swear by our dehumidifiers. Not such a problem in summer, but in a rainy spring we notice the difference. Hope yours dries out soon.
